Plot

Sweeping the Cannes Film Festival off its feet, The Selfish Giant spins a modern-day parable of friendship and consequence. It follows the intertwining lives of Arbor (Conner Chapman), a fiery 13-year-old, and his loyal comrade Swifty (Shaun Thomas), both of whom exist on the fringes of their close-knit community. The boys find an unlikely mentor in Kitten (Sean Gilder), a grizzled local scrap dealer. With a horse and cart as their only companions, Arbor and Swifty embark on a humble venture—gathering scrap metal for their newfound boss. Swifty discovers a profound kinship with the horses, while Arbor, eager for recognition and affluence, models himself after the shrewd Kitten. However, favoritism soon darkens the dynamic, as Kitten reveals a preference for Swifty, igniting a spark of resentment in Arbor. This unattended spark eventually flares into a blaze of jealousy, driving a wedge through the heart of their friendship. As Arbor's ambition morphs into avarice, and his emulation of Kitten slides into exploitation, a storm of tension brews over this unlikely trio. The tempest finally breaks in a life-altering event, a poignant climax that reshapes their world, leaving no life untouched by its tragic resonance. The Selfish Giant is a tale that explores the boundaries of loyalty, the price of ambition, and the heart-wrenching power of consequence.
