The Secrets of Comfort House (2006)

In the shadowy heart of Los Angeles, psychologist Wendy Brown is forced to confront the brutal reality of domestic abuse when her sister succumbs to her violent husband's wrath. In an act of desperate self-defense, Wendy ends her brother-in-law's life, a nightmarish event that compels her to seek refuge in the quaint town of Corinth, Oregon. Here, amidst the backdrop of an emerging ski area, she establishes Comfort House, a sanctuary for battered women, in her own home, while laying the groundwork for a permanent refuge on her sprawling acreage. Yet, Wendy quickly discovers a chilling undercurrent of violence in Corinth. The town, dominated by a hyper-masculine hunting community, harbors a disturbing culture of wife-beating. More alarmingly, the law turns a blind eye to these atrocities, led by the intimidating Sheriff "Bear" Trapp, a hunting enthusiast himself, whose friends number among the accused abusers. The somber peace of Comfort House is shattered when one of the abusive husbands is found dead under suspicious circumstances. Sheriff Trapp, eager to dismiss the incident, labels it a suicide, refusing to investigate further. However, his deputy Curtis, who has recently started a romantic relationship with Wendy, suspects foul play. When another husband ends up dead, Curtis' murder theory gains chilling credibility. Simultaneously, Wendy becomes the target of a sinister stalker, driving a dark colored pickup truck, who seems intent on pinning the murders on her. As Wendy and Curtis navigate a web of danger, deceit, and death, they work tirelessly to uncover the truth. They must identify the true killer and protect Wendy from both her relentless stalker and the distrustful Sheriff Trapp, who would seize upon any opportunity to implicate her. As they delve deeper, they stumble upon a plot far more intricate and sinister than they could have ever imagined. This is the dark, twisting tale of The Secrets of Comfort House.
