The Safecracker (1958)

In the shadowy underworld of 1930s London, Colley Dawson, an upright locksmith turned expert safecracker, finds himself entangled with Benny Carfield, a morally bankrupt antiques dealer. Together, they orchestrate a dangerous dance of theft and treachery, with Dawson cracking safes and Carfield peddling the stolen treasures. The spoils of their dubious endeavors enable Dawson to live a glamourous double life in the arms of Vi, a small-time film actress. However, the relentless hounds of Scotland Yard eventually catch up to Dawson, resulting in a ten-year prison sentence. Two years into his sentence, the world is plunged into the chaos of World War II. England is locked in a desperate struggle against Germany, and Dawson's unique skills are seen as an asset by the War Office. They propose a daring mission - infiltrate a German-occupied château in Belgium, crack a formidable safe, and photograph its contents: lists of Nazi agents operating covertly within Britain. All this without leaving a trace of their operation. In exchange for this dangerous assignment, Dawson is offered a ticket to freedom - an early release from the remaining eight years of his prison sentence. He finds himself in the heart of enemy territory, where not only the safe stands as an obstacle, but also the captivating Irene, the daughter of the local resistance leader.
