The Runaway (2000)

In the heart of the South, a town steeped in age-old prejudice and segregation thrives under the indifferent watch of the late Sheriff. The commanding Davis brothers, Harlan and Mason, hold sway, their wealth and influence unchecked. But when World War II veteran Frank Richards steps into the Sheriff's shoes, he brings with him a fresh perspective on justice and equality, causing a ripple in the town's stagnant waters. However, Frank's progressive views aren't universally embraced, and he finds himself grappling with the town's eerie tales of a masked 'peg-leg' figure, to whom all unsolved murders are attributed. The tension escalates when Harlan is shot, the trigger allegedly pulled by a young African-American boy, in an act of rebellion against Harlan's outdated 'generosities'. In the face of mounting hostility, Frank, alongside the retired father of the prosecutor, steps up to serve as the defense counsel. Guided by the boy's white friend, Luke Winter, they embark on a mission to unravel the truth. As they navigate this twisted investigation, they not only challenge the case, but also the deeply-rooted biases of the town, setting the stage for an unprecedented upheaval.
