The Rodriguez and the Beyond (2019)

In the heart of Madrid, the Rodriguez family lives a life superficially shrouded in normality. Rodrigo, once a thriving banker, now a humble store worker at a repair franchise; Cristina, a Mexican psychotherapist; their two daughters, Alejandra, entangled in a tempestuous relationship with the self-important Bosco, and Gabriela, an eccentric young girl with an intriguing bird-doll pet; and their middle child, super-intelligent Nico, who strives to keep his brilliance concealed from his family. The story truly begins when Isabel, Rodrigo's elderly mother, hands Nico a mysterious package during a visit to her senior living community. She instructs him to open it only when he turns 15. Unable to resist, Nico, along with his best friend Edu, uncovers an old VHS tape within the package. The tape contains a message from his late grandfather regarding a hidden box buried in the family's garden. Nico unearths the box to find a crank belonging to an old refrigerator. When he fixes it back into place, the impossible happens - a man named Felix emerges, whisking the Rodriguez family through a dimensional portal to another world, Maktub. Here, they learn of their grandfather's hidden past as a Maktub agent assigned to capture Earth-fleeing criminals in 1951, but who chose instead to remain on Earth, entranced by his love for Isabel. His departure left Maktub frozen in a 1951 aesthetic, the portal he left open a secret conduit back to Earth. As Felix and Maktub's scientists scramble to find and close the open portal, the Rodriguez family return to Earth, each member donning a color-changing bracelet that reflects suspicions about their true identity. If the bracelets turn red, they'll be immediately deported back to Maktub. But as they navigate this new reality, their problems compound. Alejandra develops super-strength, even as she grapples with her boyfriend's potential infidelity. Gabriela discovers an ability to become invisible, causing chaos wherever she goes. Isabel begins to float like a balloon, and Rodrigo’s body illuminates like a light bulb when he's angry. Meanwhile, Cristina's new client is none other than the anxious Minister of Finances, Pedro Solas. Nico and Edu disappear, forcing Cristina to negotiate with Edu's arrogant parents. Rodrigo's bosses drop by unexpectedly to assess his business. Felix is mistakenly sent back to Maktub and replaced by JJ, who unbeknownst to the family, is a double-agent working for Rugen Zelig, a dangerous criminal bent on avenging himself against the Rodriguez family. Amid the chaos, the Rodriguez family must balance their newfound powers, familial relationships, and the looming threat of deportation. They may seem like an average family, but the Rodriguez clan is unquestionably from another world.
