Plot

In a small Mexican locale, a labyrinth of family pride, avarice, machismo, homophobia, and dreams of the downtrodden intertwine. The wealthy and elderly Don Alejo stands on the precipice of a lucrative deal that would see him sell the entire town for a handsome profit. His only obstacle? Purchasing the local bordello, which is under the reluctant ownership of Manuelita, a flamboyantly gay, aging individual who cross-dresses and performs as a flamenco dancer. Manuelita is torn between the desire to sell and flee from the town's prejudices and the resistance from his daughter who longs to stay. This delicate equilibrium is disrupted by the return of the hot-blooded Pancho, a puppet in Alejo's hands, who had previously instilled fear in Manuelita. As Pancho breaks free from Alejo's manipulative grasp and dares to flirt and dance with Manuelita, he finds himself teetering on the edge of being labeled a "maricón." With each step, the tension builds towards a climax, where honor, dreams, and identities will be challenged in this vivid portrayal of rural Mexican life. The Place Without Limits (1978) is a poignant exploration of love, fear, and the courage to be oneself amidst societal prejudice.
