The New Daughter (2009)

In the wake of a painful divorce, acclaimed author, John James, uproots his life, moving his teenage daughter, Louisa, and younger son, Sam, to a secluded old house nestled in the dense woods of Mercy, South Carolina. A palpable sense of isolation envelops the family, with Louisa, on the cusp of puberty, pining for her absent mother, Isabel, and drawn to a mysterious Indian burial mound that lies on their property. As Louisa's fascination with the mound intensifies, she begins to exhibit strange behaviors that defy explanation. She's found sleepwalking, tightly clutching a straw doll of unknown origin, and returning home late from the mound, her body smeared with mud. The house itself seems to harbor secrets, with unexplainable noises echoing from the roof and the woods, and the unsettling disappearance of the family cat. Young Sam, feeling the creeping dread, watches this all unfold with a growing sense of fear. Louisa's teacher, Cassandra Parker, attributes the girl's changes to the upheaval of their new life, the throes of puberty and the absence of her mother. However, when John uncovers disturbing truths about a tragedy tied to the house, he can no longer dismiss his daughter's peculiar behavior as mere adolescence. In a desperate attempt to understand and protect his family, John seeks out the previous owner, Roger Wayne, in Charleston. Upon his return, he discovers that the recommended babysitter, Mrs. Amworth, has mysteriously vanished. John must unravel the eerie history and unearth the sinister secrets of his new home before it's too late. As the truth begins to surface, the boundaries between reality and the supernatural blur, deeply entwining John and his family in a chilling tale of ancient lore and desperate survival.
