Plot

In a world where martinis serve as both a temptation and a tonic, John Rosow, an ex-New York cop turned private investigator, finds himself in a whirlwind of mystery and intrigue. An unexpected call from the unfamiliar attorney Drexler Hewitt plunges Rosow into a high-stakes game of pursuit and discovery. Armed only with a photograph and a directive to tail a middle-aged man aboard the California Zephyr train, Rosow is cast adrift on a cross-country journey from Chicago to Los Angeles. Our protagonist quickly realizes that the Hispanic adolescent accompanying his target may be more than just an innocent bystander. Amidst the rhythmic clatter of train tracks, and through the sun-soaked streets of Southern California, Rosow finds himself entangled with a cast of peculiar characters, their paths intertwined in a web of coincidence—or perhaps, design. His journey becomes a labyrinth of revelations as he uncovers his subject's identity to be a man presumed dead after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. As the pieces of this complex puzzle fall into place, the allure of a hefty reward tempts him further into the rabbit hole, charging him with a task to return the missing person to his wife in New York City. However, the deeper Rosow delves into this enigma, the more he is forced to question the motives of all those involved, including his own. As he grapples with the echoes of his past and the implications of his newfound knowledge, Rosow must decide whose interests he will ultimately serve. Through a blend of suspense, ambiguity and personal struggle, The Missing Person presents a captivating narrative that challenges the borders of loyalty and self-interest.
