Plot

In the bustling labyrinth of nighttime Hong Kong, an assorted group of individuals, as diverse as the city itself, board a minibus in Mongkok bound for Tai Po. Among the passengers, a drug-addled youth, a quarreling couple, a woman with prayer beads, a smitten girl, and their loquacious driver form an unlikely assembly of characters on a seemingly ordinary night. As they exit a tunnel, the world outside transforms into an eerie tableau of emptiness - the streets and buildings are devoid of life, and the city's inhabitants appear to have vanished into thin air. Only the relentless flicker of neon lights persists, a ghostly reminder of a world that once was. This motley crew finds themselves inexplicably thrust six years into the future, trapped in a disconcerting reality where time has run amok. They seek sanctuary in a desolate café, grappling with their newfound solitude and wrestling with the enigma of their circumstances. Suddenly, the members of the minibus begin to fall ill, some even disintegrating to death, their bodies succumbing to an unseen threat. A mysterious man in a gas mask emerges, revealing himself as a Japanese former classmate claiming to be an ally. Intriguingly, they all receive a simultaneous phone call broadcasting lyrics to a David Bowie song, a cryptic message that appears to originate from a distant mountain. The group hypothesizes about nuclear explosions and virulent diseases, their fears growing as their theories remain unconfirmed. Visions of evil taunt one member's mind, casting a sinister shadow over their already fraught journey. Their quest for answers takes them towards the mountain, all the while pursued by an ominous army of gas-masked figures intent on obliterating their bus. "The Midnight After" is a tantalizing journey through a dystopian Hong Kong, where a group of strangers must navigate a myriad of unexplained phenomena against the backdrop of a deserted city. The film ends as they escape their pursuers and tread towards the mountain, leaving viewers on the precipice of their own interpretations, with many riddles yet to be unraveled. This is a story steeped in suspense, where reality is distorted, time is fragmented, and survival hangs in the balance.
