The Merchant of Venice (1980)

Beneath a veil of affluence and prosperity, Antonio, a wealthy merchant, is consumed by an inexplicable melancholy. The arrival of his close friend Bassanio, consumed by love for the enigmatic Portia, temporarily lifts Antonio's spirits. Portia, an heiress to a peculiar will, can only be wed to the suitor who chooses the correct one from three cryptic caskets of silver, gold, and lead. Cash-strapped Bassanio, determined to win Portia's hand, turns to Antonio for financial assistance. Despite his own despair, Antonio wants nothing more than to aid his friend, leading him to seek a loan from Shylock, a moneylender. Nursing resentments from past slights, Shylock seizes this opportunity to propose an unusual agreement for the loan. When Antonio's fortunes take a disastrous turn, the harsh conditions of Shylock's loan threaten his very existence. It then falls upon Bassanio and Portia to navigate a path through this ruthless game of chance and choice, in a desperate bid to rescue Antonio.
