In the quaint confines of a small Georgia town, a twelve-year-old tomboy, Frankie Addams, finds herself adrift in the world that seems to be passing her by. An intriguing blend of a child's imagination and a burgeoning adult perspective makes her an odd fit among her peers, resulting in a life of seclusion and self-inflicted blame. The vibrant camaraderie she shares with her young neighbor, John Henry, is not considered friendship in her eyes, as she yearns for an equal rather than a junior. While her father remains engrossed in his business, Frankie's life is largely shaped by their housekeeper, Berenice. Two life-altering events following the wedding act as catalysts, steering Frankie towards truly finding her place in life and marking her transition from a confused girl to a young woman.
