In the heart of suburban ennui, a marriage teeters on the brink of collapse. Mary (Debra Winger) and Michael (Tracy Letts), bound by years of matrimony yet estranged in their hearts, share a home but little else. Their lives are intertwined with secret lovers; Robert (Aidan Gillen) for her, and Lucy (Melora Walters) for him. Their passionate extramarital affairs seem to offer an escape from the monotony, a promise of freedom echoed by their insistent lovers who demand an end to the marriage. The couple, resigned to their fate, plan to announce their separation following a visit from their son, Joel (Tyler Ross), and his fresh-faced girlfriend, Erin (Jessica Sula).
