In the aftermath of his service in the U.S. Army, Harry finds himself thrust into the everyday life of England, having reluctantly followed his wife across the Atlantic. Securing employment as a truck driver, the mundanity of his new life is soon disrupted by his manipulative boss, Joe Easy, who seeks to embroil the ex G.I. in a perilous smuggling operation. At first, Harry resists, holding onto his sense of duty and morality. However, Joe has a trump card - Lynn, his enchanting mistress. Presenting her as a temptation, Harry's resolve crumbles, and he succumbs to both the allure of Lynn and the illicit thrill of smuggling. As he abandons his wife for his new lover, he dreams of a future where he's gathered enough wealth to return to the States with Lynn. But fate has a cruel twist in store, as an unexpected disaster befalls his young son, Butch, leaving Harry's newfound life hanging in the balance.
