Plot

In the throes of the savage Spanish Civil War in 1937, a jovial circus clown, in the midst of his performance, is abruptly conscripted by a militia. Clad in his vibrant costume, he's thrust a machete and steered into a blistering battle against National soldiers, where he single-handedly decimates an entire squadron. This jarring spectacle is the backdrop that sets the scene for the tragic tale of his son, Javier. Fast forward to 1973, the waning days of the Franco regime. Javier, bearing the heavy legacy of his father, yearns to tread the same path, but the scars of his past painted his life with too much sorrow. He's no comedian, but a mime of melancholy, fated to don the role of the Sad Clown. Seeking solace in the kaleidoscopic world of the circus, he integrates into an eccentric troupe of performers. However, his role as the Sad Clown subjects him to the daily torments of the boorish Happy Clown, Sergio, who finds amusement in Javier's humiliation. Amidst this turmoil, he crosses paths with Natalia, a bewitching acrobat and the battered wife of Sergio. Smitten by Natalia's charm, Javier is consumed by a fervent desire to liberate her from her brutal husband, consequently igniting Sergio's wrath. But Natalia finds herself in a heartbreaking tug-of-war of emotions, entrapped between her growing fondness for Javier and her unbridled passion for Sergio. As the circus tent folds its vibrant colors, the dark shadows of jealousy, love, and obsession threaten to consume them all.
