Plot

Jimmie Fails IV, a third-generation San Franciscan of African descent, grapples with the harsh reality of displacement, a narrative all too common in his community. Earning a meager living as a nurse at a seniors' care facility, Jimmie finds shelter upon the cramped quarters of his best friend Montgomery Allen's residence, a space he shares with his visually impaired grandfather. Montgomery's life mirrors Jimmie's struggles, as he scrambles to make ends meet at a local supermarket fish counter while nurturing his passion for sketching and playwriting. The cobweb of disenfranchisement weaves itself around their lives and those of the locals, from a fiery soapbox preacher, a gang of young black men lingering outside Montgomery's house, to Jimmie's own kin. His estranged father ekes out a life in a single-room occupancy, his mother and stepfather have relocated to Los Angeles, and his Auntie Wanda has been forcibly moved to the suburbs. Jimmie yearns for the San Francisco of his memories, symbolized by the house his grandfather built post-war, echoing the architectural style of a bygone era. However, the house is now a distant dream, lost by his father, nestled amidst a gentrified neighborhood, and currently inhabited by a white couple with no inclination to sell. Its value has skyrocketed into the millions, far beyond Jimmie's reach. But with Montgomery by his side, Jimmie embarks on a relentless quest to reclaim his ancestral home, a symbol of his rightful place in a city that seems to have forgotten him.
