Plot

On the brink of her twenty-fifth birthday, Mitzi Bearclaw, a young woman of First Nations descent, stands at a crossroads in vibrant Toronto. With dreams of crafting transformative hat designs and a blooming romance with her photographer-in-training boyfriend, Ringo Leaves-No-Shadow, Mitzi anticipates a year of grandeur. However, an unexpected call from her father, William Bearclaw, pulls her back to the heart of her homeland – the isolated Owl Island. Her mission is to care for her ailing mother, Annabelle, whom Mitzi perceives to be on the brink of death. Mitzi's relationship with the stern and embittered Annabelle has always been rocky, contrasting sharply with her bond with her father. The only one who has ever managed to soothe Annabelle's tempestuous spirit is Mitzi's cousin, Charlie Bearclaw, affectionately dubbed "Charlie B." in tribute to his myriad of B-named heroes. As a natural-born storyteller with dreams of teaching, Charlie B. himself battles persistent health issues, spending ample time in hospitals. Mitzi's reluctance to return to Owl Island is steeped in her belief that it's a cradle of chaos, a place that tends to warp its inhabitants. Yet, upon her homecoming, she finds her mother's health not as dire as she'd assumed, and the island not as bleak. As she navigates her way around the island, her interactions with her family, alongside Charlie B., Honeyboy Yellowdog – the island's boat operator she finds herself inexplicably drawn towards, the fiercely possessive Simone Muskrat who stakes her claim on Honeyboy, and the ethereal presence of three island spirits, Faith, Hope, and Charity, begin to shift her perspective. Mitzi's incredible 25th year unfolds not in the bustling streets of Toronto, but amidst the raw, untamed landscape of Owl Island. It's a journey that may not only change her view of her roots but also shape her future in ways she never envisioned. The island she once viewed as a breeding ground for insanity might just hold the key to self-discovery and understanding.
