The Immigrant (2013)

In the year 1921, the hopeful and guarded optimism of two sisters, Ewa Cybulska and Magda, is put to the test as they set sail from their native Poland in pursuit of the elusive American dream. Landing on the shores of Ellis Island, their dreams are abruptly halted as they face their first trial. Magda falls ill and is separated from Ewa, forcibly quarantined by the island's doctors. Ewa, now alone and branded a "woman of low moral standing," finds herself thrust into the harsh, unforgiving streets of Manhattan, facing deportation. In this desperate landscape, she crosses paths with the enigmatic and fiery Bruno Weiss, a man with questionable connections to the immigration authorities and an even more dubious moral compass. Bruno promises to secure Magda's release, but at a steep price - Ewa must join his brood of women forced into prostitution. Reluctantly, she agrees, her desperation to free her sister outweighing her fears. As Ewa navigates this treacherous world, a new complication arises in the form of Bruno's cousin, Emil, also known as "Orlando the Magician." Upon meeting Ewa, Orlando is instantly captivated, adding an unexpected twist to her ordeal. He offers her a glimmer of hope amidst her nightmare, a chance to escape the clutches of her grim reality. "The Immigrant" spins a tale of resilience and desperation, love and betrayal, set against the backdrop of a dream turned sour. With Ewa at the heart of the story, this film presents a love triangle far removed from the ordinary, a testament to the struggles and sacrifices of immigrant life in the early 20th century.
