Plot

In the gilded age of 1905 New York, Lily Bart, a radiant socialite, navigates the treacherous waters of high society. Her beauty and charm are her currency, but they also spark envy and unwanted attention. While her social stature is enviable, Lily is shackled by financial dependence and a mounting secret - a tide of gambling debts that threatens to drown her reputation. Her only lifeline is the modest allowance from her Aunt Julia, far from enough to keep her afloat. Her escape route seems clear - marriage to a wealthy suitor. But her heart and head are in a constant tug-of-war. She finds herself rejecting the dull, yet affluent Percy Gryce, and spurning the advances of Sim Rosedale, a Jewish stock broker. In her quest to conform to societal expectations, she sabotages her chances at forging her own path. The only man who captures her interest is Lawrence Selden, a man as financially strained as she is. Their love is a flicker of light in her world of opulence and deceit, but the harsh reality of their financial situation threatens to extinguish it. Lily's life spirals downwards when her friend Gus Trenor, desiring more than friendship from her, recklessly squanders her money in the stock market. Desperate, she clings to a set of private letters - her last resort. But using them would shatter the heart of the one man she has ever truly loved. 'The House of Mirth' is a tragic tale of love, wealth, and societal hypocrisy at the turn of the century. It paints a poignant picture of a woman caught in the gears of social expectation, struggling to retain her integrity while grappling with the allure of love and the necessity of survival.
