Plot

Set amidst the backdrop of the gold smuggling racket thriving after the U.S. departed from the gold standard, "The Gold Racket" (1937) hurls you into an exhilarating world of intrigue and danger. The story unfolds as the unscrupulous McKenzie (William L. Thorne) and his gang find a lucrative opportunity smuggling gold from Mexico. Their operations, centred around the Los Morados mine, run smoothly until their reckless actions lead to the death of two federal agents. In response, the Department of Justice deploys their ace operative, Alan O'Connor (Conrad Nagel), to track down these criminals. His mission: disrupt the gold traffic and bring the killers to justice. He traces the gold's origin to the Los Morados mine, and his search takes him on a dangerous journey to Mexico. In this clandestine underworld, he encounters the audacious aviator Steve Williams (Frank Milan), who flamboyantly settles his saloon bills with gold nuggets. As the plot thickens, Alan employs the help of the Tarentella Cafe's owner to infiltrate the gang's operations. He then enlists Operative No. 37, Bobbie Reynolds (Eleanor Hunt), his sweetheart, to join the ruse as an entertainer at the cafe. Alan discovers a crucial clue in Steve's room: a map pinpointing the gang's American headquarters near Winston, California. With this lead, he leaves Bobbie behind and ventures to California, unaware that he's been recognized and followed. Meanwhile, Bobbie trails him by train. As the net closes in, Alan and other agents set a trap for Steve at the landing field, ready to apprehend him with his illicit cargo of Mexican gold. However, unbeknownst to them, the gang has kidnapped Bobbie and holds her captive in an old mine shaft. "The Gold Racket" is a pulse-pounding tale of crime and justice, love and danger, that will leave you on the edge of your seat until the final credits roll.
