Plot

The Fever (2021) unfolds the compelling story of Justino, a 45-year-old member of the indigenous Desana tribe, grappling with a life far removed from his roots. Working as a security guard at the bustling Manaus cargo port, Justino is a silent observer of an urban world that conflicts with his ancestral traditions. The death of his wife leaves him with his younger daughter, Vanessa, his only kin in this concrete jungle on the outskirts of town. Immersed in her duties as a nurse at a local health clinic, Vanessa is a beacon of ambition. She is accepted to study medicine in the distant Brasília, preparing to embark on a journey that will widen the chasm between her future and Justino's past. As Vanessa's dreams take flight, Justino is grounded by a mysterious and unrelenting fever. As the fever gradually takes hold, he finds himself teetering on the edge of consciousness during the day, while at night, a cryptic creature haunts his path. All the while, a visit from his brother stirs memories of a life he left behind in the heart of the jungle two decades ago. Caught between the unyielding grasp of the city and the beckoning of his native village, Justino finds himself in a limbo, struggling to anchor his existence and sense of belonging. Rich in cultural commentary and mystical undertones, The Fever (2021) is a poignant exploration of generational gaps, cultural dissonance, and the human search for identity. The film, which saw Regis Myrupu bag the Best Actor award at the 72nd Annual Locarno Film Festival, beautifully juxtaposes the urban and the indigenous, the modern and the traditional, and the tangible and the mystical, culminating in a cinematic experience that lingers.
