Plot

In the quirky heartland of Calico County, the story of Charley (Dan Blocker), a gentle giant with a heart of gold, unfolds. As the town's sole blacksmith, Charley is a simple yet endearing character, whose world comes crashing down when his mail-order bride from the East fails to appear despite him sending a year's earnings for her journey. The town's anticipation turns to shock, leaving Charley humiliated and heartbroken, contemplating an exit from the town he has served so faithfully. Just as Calico County faces the prospect of losing its blacksmith, the townsfolk, in their collective desperation, concoct a plan as wild as the west itself. Enter Sadie (Nanette Fabray), the new saloon-girl with a heart as fiery as her spirit. She's convinced to pose as Charley's bride-to-be, a part she plays with captivating charm, all in an effort to retain the indispensable services of the loveable blacksmith. The town's colorful characters add to the lively chaos, from Jim Backus's Sheriff with mayoral ambitions to Wally Cox's Mr. Bester, a man under the thumb of his domineering wife (Marge Champion). Sprinkle in appearances from the likes of Mickey Rooney, Stubby Kaye, Iron Eyes Cody, and Jack Cassidy, and you've got a western comedy that's as unpredictable as a desert storm and as lively as a saloon on a Saturday night. The Cockeyed Cowboys of Calico County is a heartwarming tale of camaraderie, unanticipated love, and the lengths a community will go to preserve its heartbeat. It's a rollicking ride through love, laughter, and life in the wild, wild west.
