Hollywood star Mike Mitchell temporarily trades the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown for the comforting nostalgia of his hometown in the Hudson Valley, New York, anticipating a serene Christmas hiatus. As he plans to propose to his childhood friend and now divorcee Andi Cruz, a travel agent, he also navigates his new role as a father figure to Andi's son, Noah. The unexpected return of Noah's sporadic father, Ryan Zane, adds a new twist to their holiday plans. The Mitchell family, once famous for their extravagant "Christmas house", a long-held tradition of transforming their family home into a Christmas wonderland, are hoping for a less eventful holiday this year. The senior Mitchells, Bill and Phylis, have retired and are looking for quieter pursuits, while Mike's brother, Brandon, his architect husband Jake, and their two infants are eager to establish their own unique Christmas traditions. However, the Christmas calm is disrupted when Mike's publicist Kathleen secures him a spot on "Deck Those Halls", a competitive Christmas decorating show, resurrecting the "Christmas house" tradition in a grand, last-minute spectacle.
