The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971)

In the shadowy confines of the Terzi Institute, a hub of mysterious genetic research, the former journalist Franco Arno, now blind and living a quiet life crafting crosswords, resides with his orphaned niece, Lori. Their days are simple, yet a chance overhearing of an eerie conversation between two men outside the Institute sparks a flame of curiosity that pulls them into a web of intrigue and danger. On the same night, the institute is violated by a break-in, and the following morning, the city wakes up to the news of the untimely demise of Dr. Calabresi, a researcher at the Institute, in what police believe to be an accident. However, Lori, with her attentive eyes, recognizes the man in the car from the previous night as the now deceased scientist. Arno, driven by an insatiable quest for truth, enlists the help of the tenacious reporter, Carlo Giordani. Together, they dive headfirst into a photographic examination, uncovering evidence that suggests Calabresi was not a victim of a random accident, but rather, a calculated murder. But as they dig deeper, the photograph mysteriously disappears and the photographer is also found dead. Their investigation unravels a twisted skein of clues, leading them to a revolutionary drug, experimental XYY chromosome research tied to delinquency, and the possibility of a government conspiracy. They realize there are nine knots to untangle in this cat o' nine tails mystery: each of the five assistants of the institute, the stepdaughter of Prof. Terzi, Anna; the late Dr. Calabresi's fiancée, Bianca; the vanished photograph; and the unsolved break-in at the Institute.
