Plot

In the politically charged atmosphere of 1965, we meet Andy Nichol (Chase Ellison), a bright yet conflict-averse 12-year-old navigating the treacherous waters of junior high school. Like any boy his age, he dreads the mockery and punishment from his peers. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when the universally adored Mr. Simon (Ed Harris) pairs him with Stanley, known more infamously as "Big G" (Alexander Walters), for a significant term project. With his distinctive orange hair, oversized head and ears, "Big G" has been an easy target for mockery from their classmates. This unlikely pairing puzzles Andy until he begins to comprehend Mr. Simon’s profound wisdom. The narrative takes a dramatic twist when a cruel rumor targets Mr. Simon after the suspension of a school bully by Principal Kelner (Amy Madigan). The bully, punished for his savage assault on a girl he believed to have "cooties," incites a chain of events that alters the lives of Andy, "Big G," and Mr. Simon irrevocably. As the story unravels, Andy witnesses "Big G" stand up to the bully fearlessly, revealing a side of him he had never anticipated. "Big G," it turns out, is a beacon of brilliance, kindness, tolerance, and unparalleled dignity, surpassing anyone Andy has encountered before. This revelation leaves Andy grappling with the complexities of stereotypes, friendship, and the turmoil of growing up.
