Tammy Tell Me True (1961)

Emerging from the marshy tendrils of the Mississippi River swamps, the unschooled yet charming Tammy Tyree (Sandra Dee) has been residing in the opulent Brent mansion since confessing her love for Peter Brent. Each day, she anticipates a letter from Peter, who is away at an agricultural college, but finds herself consistently disappointed. Determined to match Peter's intellectual advancements, Tammy makes a bold decision to attend college herself, specifically the esteemed Seminola College, known for its select acceptance of special students for a handful of classes. With a heart full of hope, Tammy returns to her humble dwelling, a houseboat named the Ellen B after her late grandmother. She has the houseboat towed upstream, anchoring it in the vicinity of the college where she plans to reside. At Seminola, Tammy is a conspicuous outsider amidst the sophisticated student body. However, much like she did with Peter and the Brents, she leaves an indelible impression on the people she encounters. Among those captivated by her unique charm are Buford Woodly, an artist grappling with lost inspiration; Miss Jenks, the empathetic Dean of Women who assists Tammy with her college arrangements; and Tom Freeman, the Public Speaking professor intrigued by Tammy's distinctive bayou dialect. Each interaction nudges Tammy towards self-discovery and challenges her relationship with Peter. Yet, it's the cantankerous and wealthy benefactress of the college, Annie Rook Call, who is most profoundly affected by Tammy's refreshing authenticity. Having dismissed countless girls sent to be her companion, Mrs. Call finds an unexpected camaraderie with Tammy that brings a new sense of freedom, helping her escape the manipulative clutches of her power-hungry niece, Suzanne Rook.
