Plot

In the captivating cinematic fusion of fiction and documentary, "Take the Money and Run" presents the comedic chronicles of Virgil Starkwell - an inept petty criminal with an unfulfilled dream of becoming a cellist. Victim to childhood bullying and bereft of any musical talent, Virgil's life takes a twisted turn as he descends into the realm of street gangs, marking the beginning of his unfortunate encounters with prison. The film, narrated with a voice-over and punctuated by interviews with his family, friends, and acquaintances, traces Virgil's tumultuous journey. It delves into his unsuccessful musical aspirations, his obsessive fascination with bank robberies, and his uncanny knack for landing himself behind bars. His escape from prison introduces him to Louise, a hardworking laundry worker. In an attempt to impress her, Virgil spins a web of lies, claiming to be a cellist in a symphony orchestra. The truth inevitably surfaces when Virgil's arrested during a hold-up, leading Louise to him in prison. Unfazed, he manages to break out, whisking Louise away to another state. Struggling to fit into the norms of an honest life, Virgil finds himself in a job that seems to suit him. However, a blackmailing colleague forces him back into the chaotic world of crime. His attempts at heists are comically disastrous, ensuring a one-way ticket back to prison each time. "Take the Money and Run" is a humorous exploration of one man's failed attempts at crime and music, a blend of interviews and narratives painting the picture of an endearingly clumsy anti-hero. The film promises a rollercoaster of laughter, sympathy, and suspense, inviting viewers to join Virgil on his hilariously unfortunate escapades.
