In the atmospheric southern reaches of England, an unsuspecting school teacher, Jenny Bunn (Hayley Mills), embarks on a fresh chapter of her life. Her new dwelling is a boarding house, run by the charming but weary Martha Thompson (Sheila Hancock), and her Labour councilor husband, Dick Thompson (John Bird). Amidst the humdrum of her new environment, Jenny encounters the enigmatic Patrick Standish (Oliver Reed), a graphics arts professor at a local technical college. Their paths cross through Anna (Geraldine Sherman), a fellow boarder and casual acquaintance of Patrick, sparking an undeniable attraction between the pure-hearted Jenny and the bachelor Patrick.
