Plot

Set in the sun-kissed, surf-loving suburb of Nobbys Beach, Australia, in the transformative year of 1975, Swinging Safari is a nostalgic trip into a world awash with boxed wine, bad hair, baby oil, and the newfound wonder of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Here, life is as unpredictable and vibrant as the era itself, with everything revolving around the simple pleasures of beach life and the dizzying thrill of adolescence. The story follows the 14-year-old Jeff, a young boy teetering on the brink of adulthood, with his hormones racing faster than he can keep up. Jeff navigates this kaleidoscopic world while harboring a sweet crush on Melly, the shy and sensitive girl-next-door. Their lives, tranquil like the suburban cul-de-sac they inhabit, are disrupted when the body of a colossal 200-ton blue whale washes ashore – an event they perceive as the most monumental occurrence in their lives. Simultaneously, the adult world is in flux. Their eccentric parents, the Mums and Dads of this peaceful beach town, are embarking on their own journey of discovery, embracing the sexual revolution that had swept up on Australia's sunny beaches. They celebrate this seismic shift behind closed doors, toasting to the era of liberation with boxed wine and a sense of wild abandon. Yet, in an ironic parallel to the decaying whale, this seemingly idyllic world teeters on the brink of chaos. Like the mesmerizing slow-motion spectacle of a house of cards collapsing, everything is about to go spectacularly wrong. Swinging Safari is a heartwarming, nostalgic, and often hilarious exploration of a time of bad styles, questionable choices, but undeniably good times.
