Nestled in the heartland of Iowa, the Frake family - steadfast patriarch Abel, dedicated matriarch Melissa, and their young adult children Wayne and Margy - are on the cusp of the annual Iowa State Fair, a multi-day spectacle of rural celebration. Wayne, left in a lurch as his sweetheart Eleanor can't accompany him, and Margy, caught in a whirlwind of dreams about the allure of a mature relationship, rather than her unofficial engagement to the unsophisticated Harry Ware, are both apprehensive about the journey. As they step into the bustling atmosphere of the fair, Melissa is battling her own anxieties, wondering if her mincemeat will pass the rigorous judging while Abel grapples with the unpredictable affections of his potential prize-winning boar, Blue Boy, who seems to be love-struck.
