Plot

Aunt Emma Bates, an unassuming spinster portrayed by Zasu Pitts, escapes the monotony of her life, dominated by her two overbearing sisters, to immerse herself in the pulsing heart of the "Big Town". She intends to witness a boxing match featuring Mickey O’Banion, the son of her long-lost love and a former boxing champion. In the midst of the electrifying arena, Emma finds herself seated next to Terry, a diligent reporter embodied by Roger Pryor, who is entangled in a dangerous mission to locate Rex Crenshaw, the elusive lawyer of notorious gangster "Flower" Henderson. As the fight unfolds, a web of misidentifications ensnares Emma, and she becomes embroiled in a deadly feud between rival gangsters. Mistaken for the infamous gunwoman, Ma Parker, she becomes the object of suspicion for Gus Hammond's henchmen, who suspect her of being a pawn for Henderson. When Mickey is shot amidst a heated dispute at Henderson's club and later abducted, Emma's visit transforms into a daring rescue mission. With an unanticipated blend of her innate innocence and a newfound grit, Emma, alongside Terry's fiancée Maris, decides to exploit the misconception about her identity. Posing as the feared Ma Parker, she plunges deeper into the underbelly of the city, determined to liberate Mickey and restore order to the chaotic world she has stumbled upon. As she navigates the treacherous waters of the fight rackets and gang rivalries, Emma ensures that justice prevails in this high-stakes game, proving that even in the face of danger, she's more than just a meek middle-aged woman.
