Plot

In the humble village of Charkhi, Pakistan, nestled amidst the turmoil of political unrest, resides the widowed Ayesha Khan and her adolescent son, Saleem. Their life, as simple as the landscape that surrounds them, survives on the pension left by Ayesha's departed husband, Afsan. Ayesha, a woman of strength and dreams, sees a future for Saleem in a job near the local Gurdwara and a life with his beloved, Zubeida, the daughter of Amin and Shabnam. However, this tranquil existence is ruffled with the arrival of two imposing figures from Rawalpindi, Rashid and Mazhar, who come bearing the weight of Islamic law and a new wave of religious awareness. As the winds of change blow over Charkhi, Saleem, a quiet dreamer, finds himself caught in the vortex, his innocence facing the test of time and transformation. The year is 1979, and Pakistan is under the iron fist of General Zia-ul-Haq's martial law. The country, declared a Muslim state, stands on the precipice of uncertainty, the echoes of impending Jihad against India and non-believers reverberating through its lands. Amidst this chaos, Sikh pilgrims are granted permission to visit the local Gurdwara, bringing with them a Sikh stranger with an inexplicable desire to meet Ayesha. Ayesha, a mother devoted to her son's education and well-being, finds herself grappling with growing anxiety as the political maelstrom threatens to transform Salim beyond recognition. 'Silent Waters' is a poignant tale of a mother's love, a son's innocence, and a nation's struggle, all intertwined in the intricate tapestry of faith, politics, and destiny.
