Plot

Immersed in the chilling grip of the early 1950s Stalin's Personality Cult, "Shivers" unfolds in a small, unassuming town. Here, we meet young Tomek, whose life is jolted off course when his father, a Home Army veteran, is seized by the authorities. His mother is left to single-handedly navigate the treacherous waters of parenthood for their two children. Above them, a neighbor's despair culminates in suicide when her husband too is snatched away to a prison camp. The harsh winter forces the children into a primitive form of self-preservation, clapping their hands relentlessly at school for warmth. Their teachers, stern and narrow-minded zealots, attempt to indoctrinate them with their ideology. A defiant act of unity sees the entire class standing up in church, subverting the intended propaganda lesson. Summer brings a new challenge for Tomek as he's dispatched to training school. Here, he's saturated with the state's doctrine, absorbing it like a sponge. When his father finally walks free from the prison's clutches, he returns to a son transformed, a stranger wearing the face of the boy he once knew.
