Shadows Over Shanghai (1938)

In the heart of Shanghai, adjacent to an American mission, the young Russian teacher, Irene Roma, becomes the unexpected guardian of a precious amulet. This mystical token is passed to her by her brother, Peter Roma, who falls victim to Igor Sargoza's wrath, a disgraced Russian secret agent with a greedy eye for the amulet's worth. Desperate to escape Shanghai but lacking a Russian passport, Irene turns to Howard Barclay, her brother's English comrade, and his audacious American friend, Johnny McGinty, a fearless newspaper photographer. The inventive Barclay proposes an unconventional solution: a marriage between McGinty and Irene, hoping to pass on McGinty's American citizenship to her. Amidst the chaos, a beautiful mandarin figurine arrives as a wedding gift from a Chinese friend. Meant to serve as an incense burner, McGinty cunningly repurposes it as a secure hiding spot for the coveted amulet. However, the trio soon faces a hard truth: marriage does not grant Irene American citizenship. Barclay, not one to be deterred, secures a Chinese special passport that promises them a chance at safety. With Sargoza's gang hot on their heels, they successfully board a Japanese merchant ship bound for sanctuary. But their journey is far from over, as they cross paths with the cunning Fuji Yokahama, who has managed to uncover the secret hiding place of the amulet. Their voyage to safety becomes a thrilling adventure, which teeters on the edge of danger and intrigue.
