In the princely state of Balabantpur, the dying Maharaja Arunangshu lays out his final wishes, setting a course for his son, Himangshu. To secure his inheritance, Himangshu must adhere to two conditions: he is to marry a Hindu woman and produce a legitimate heir within the first three years of marriage. Bound by his father's directives, he enters into wedlock with Alaka, an ambitious actress. As the first year of their marriage draws to a close, a shroud of mystery descends upon the palace. Harinath, the young palace librarian and a close confidante of Alaka, vanishes without a trace. This inexplicable event invites the arrival of Byomkesh, a brilliant detective, and his writer friend, Ajit. Their visit to Balwantpur is masked under the guise of a hunting expedition.
