Sarah, Plain and Tall (1991)

Set in Kansas in 1910, Sarah, Plain and Tall tells the story of Sarah and Jacob. Jacob Witting is a widowed farmer who is still grieving the death of his wife during childbirth several years before. Balancing the task of managing the farm while also raising his two children, Anna and Caleb, proves to be too much for him to do on his own. So he puts together an advertisement for a mail-order bride in the newspaper, and Sarah, a spinster who lives in Maine and describes herself as “plain and tall,” responds. How will she change Jacob’s farm?
