Plot

In Todd Haynes' hauntingly introspective film, "Safe," we plunge into the seemingly idyllic life of Carol White, a California housewife enveloped by wealth, beauty, and a sea of friends. Yet, beneath the veneer of suburban tranquility, Carol is a hollow vessel, her timidity and emptiness reverberating through every interaction with the world. Initially, she seems cocooned in a protective bubble, but her haven soon morphs into a terrifying prison. Carol's life spirals into disarray when unexplained headaches escalate into grand mal seizures. She develops an unnerving sensitivity to everyday toxins – car exhaust, aerosol sprays, even the beauty products she once used without a second thought, have now turned against her. These seemingly innocuous elements of the 20th century become vile poisons, overwhelming her immune system and leaving her gasping for breath amid a sea of uncertainty. Her physical decline parallels her emotional retreat, as she shrinks from her husband's touch and spends her nights in solitary confinement, a captive within her own home. As the medical world turns a dismissive eye towards her plight, tagging her affliction as an allergy to milk or an environmental illness, Carol grows increasingly desperate. Her salvation appears in the form of Wrenwood, a new-age retreat promising refuge for the "environmentally ill." Guided by the charismatic yet dubious Peter Dunning, Carol leaves her husband and stepson behind to seek solace within this enigmatic sanctuary. "Safe" is an eerie exploration of societal and environmental toxins, seen through the eyes of a woman battling the invisible enemies within her own life. It's an unsettling narrative, ripe with ambiguity and hidden agendas, where the line between victim and predator blurs, leaving the viewer on a tightrope of suspense. Carol, once the epitome of safety, becomes a frightened pawn in a game of survival, her existence a chilling testament to a world turned hostile.
