Plot

In the heart of a city imbued with the scent of melancholy, Enoch Brae, a teenager with a morbid fascination for funerals, meanders through life haunted by the spectral presence of his only friend, Hiroshi Takahashi, a World War II Japanese kamikaze pilot. His existence, eclipsed by the tragic loss of his parents in a car accident, has turned into a solitary sojourn, with his aunt Mabel as his sole living companion. School has become a distant memory and a car, a luxury he doesn't possess. Parallelly, in this urban labyrinth, Annabel Cotton, a fiercely brave teenager diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor, basks in the ephemeral moments of her life. Her world, nestled between the comforting pages of bird books, is particularly enamored with water birds. As she quietly anticipates her looming demise, she finds solace in the arms of her sister Elizabeth and her mother, Rachel. Their paths cross at a memorial service, an unlikely setting for a budding romance. Drawn together by their shared loneliness and their unique perspectives on life and death, they find themselves plunging into a whirlwind romance. As their love for each other deepens, they discover a newfound zest for life, a beacon in their otherwise gloomy existence. But the ticking clock of Annabel's disease and the shadow of their mortality cast a bittersweet pallor over their blossoming relationship. Will they manage to carve a life out of their numbered days, or is it too late for their love story to truly begin? The poignant tale of Annabel and Enoch is a testament to the transformative power of love, even in the face of impending doom.
