Caught in the cobweb of time, Phoebe Throssel resides with her sister Susan, under the keen scrutiny of the Willoughby sisters, their nosy neighbours. The young and charming Doctor Valentine Brown, who harbours affection for Phoebe, unexpectedly announces his decision to march off to the Napoleonic wars, shattering Phoebe's dreams of a marriage proposal. As the war-torn years roll by, the once vivacious Phoebe and her sister Susan find themselves entangled in the routine monotony of a schoolteacher's life, a role that gradually weathers Phoebe's youthful charm.
