Plot

Private Buckaroo (1942) is a delightful blend of music, comedy, and patriotism, doubling as a showcase for the talents of Harry James, the Andrews Sisters, Joe E. Lewis, and the duo of Donald O'Connor & Peggy Ryan. The plot is driven by the drafting of renowned band leader Harry James, tailed by his band's charismatic vocalist, Lon Prentice (Dick Foran). Prentice, holding his fame and talent in high regard, questions the necessity of Army discipline and training, creating an intriguing discord in the ranks. Adding a hearty dose of humor to this musical military tale is Shemp Howard, who, as Sgt. Snavely, effortlessly steals the limelight whenever the band isn't in full swing. His comedic antics predominantly feature his desperate attempts to shield his sharp-tongued fiancée, brilliantly portrayed by Mary Wickes, from the persistent pursuits of the charmingly comic Lancelot Pringle McBiff (Joe E. Lewis), a nightclub comic and USO performer. Adding a final flourish to the film's enchanting narrative is an unforgettable musical finale, where Shemp shares the stage with the Andrews Sisters, performing the timeless classic, "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree." This performance arguably marks one of Shemp's finest solo features on film. Private Buckaroo unfurls as a captivating musical journey, highlighting the intersection of fame, military service, and the enduring spirit of entertainment.
