Plot

In the high-stakes world of political game-play, Pete St. John reigns supreme. A formidable political consultant with a knack for winning campaigns, he has an uncanny talent for turning underdogs into victors. His devoted assistant, Sydney Betterman, helps him manage his roster of diverse clients, ranging from Washington's Governor Andrea Stannard to the wealthy New Mexican candidate Wallace Furman, and even Roberto Cepeda, a presidential hopeful in an oil-rich, turmoil-laden South American nation. But when Pete's longtime friend and Ohio Senator Sam Hastings abruptly retires due to an undisclosed health issue, he finds himself drawn into the intrigues surrounding the mysterious Jerome Cade. A political novice with ambition in his eyes, Cade aims to fill the void left by Hastings and seeks Pete's expertise to secure the coveted seat. Behind this proposition is Arnold Billings, a PR mogul who has Cade as one of his prime clients. As the election season unfolds, Pete crosses paths with his ex-wife, Ellen Freeman, an astute investigative journalist who's delving into the murky reasons behind Hastings' sudden retirement. Their love story ended not for a lack of love, but because their demanding careers left them no room for a relationship. Now, their paths intertwine again in a web of political intrigue and hidden agendas. As Pete navigates the tumultuous waters of campaign politics, he begins to notice that someone, unseen yet omnipresent, is tracking his every move. With this realization, the facade of the political landscape starts to crumble, revealing that the stakes are much higher than he had ever imagined. The ensuing events will lead Pete to question everything he thought he knew about his work, his clients, and the very nature of power itself. Power (1986) is a thrilling exploration of political manipulation and personal redemption, a captivating journey through the shadowy corridors of authority where intrigue, ambition, and love intertwine.
