Polladhavan (1980)

In the heart of India, Seetha (Lakshmi), a humble woman of modest means, finds herself burdened with the care of her orphaned nephew, Raju, following her sister's untimely death. Seeking a stable livelihood, she embarks on an arduous journey to distant Vijaypur to take on the role of a nanny to a merchant's daughter, a role that promises solace and security. During her train journey, she falls prey to the grotesque advances of a man named Chandru, a moment of terror that is abruptly ended by a mysterious stranger who shoots Chandru dead. The stranger's face etches itself into Seetha's memory, a haunting image she presents to Inspector Murthy of the local police force. Upon reaching Vijaypur, she steps into her role as a nanny, winning over the precocious child Shobha with her nurturing nature. However, the tranquility is shattered when she is introduced to her employer, Manohar, the owner of the affluent Nandini Estates. To her horror, she recognizes him as the man who gunned down Chandru. Manohar, too, recognizes Seetha and uses a veiled threat against Raju's life to silence her. Torn between fear for her nephew's safety and her commitment to justice, Seetha is rendered speechless when called upon to identify the killer. This shift in behavior arouses suspicion in the police, leading to her being considered a suspect in Chandru's murder.
