Please Believe Me (1950)

Alison Kirbe, an endearing Londoner working-class girl, finds herself amidst an unexpected turn of life when an old soldier friend, Hank, leaves her his sprawling Texas property, the Thirty Mile Ranch. This news lands Alison in the limelight of the London press, casting her as an overnight heiress. Determined to claim her inheritance, she embarks on a transatlantic journey, from a steamship to New York to a land journey to Texas. Onboard the ship, Alison becomes the object of affection for three distinctly different men. First, there's Jeremy Taylor, a lavish playboy who enjoys showering his wealth on the woman gracing his arm. Jeremy's lawyer, Matt Kinston, is also onboard to ensure his client doesn't squander his fortune on opportunistic acquaintances. However, Matt finds himself drawn to Alison, fueling his determination to protect her from Jeremy's whims while battling his own suspicions of her newfound wealth. Lastly, Alison crosses paths with Terry Keath, a charming fortune hunter in dire straits. Terry, having read about Alison's inheritance, sees her as his ticket out of debt. Unbeknownst to Alison, Terry is heavily indebted to Lucky Reilly, a ruthless New York gangster, who is banking on Terry's success in wooing Alison as a way to recoup his money. As the voyage progresses, the men's intentions become more complex and intertwined, leading to a whirlwind of romance, suspicion, and deceit. When a shocking truth surfaces, Alison's life takes another unexpected twist. Faced with this revelation, she must devise a plan to resolve the rising tensions while navigating her own feelings towards her trio of suitors.
