Plot

In the midst of her lingering illness, devoutly evangelical Violet Hook (Annette Carell) entrusts her seven children to the part-time care of housekeeper Mrs. Quayle (Yootha Joyce). The Hook children—Elsa (Margaret Leclere), Diana (Pamela Franklin), Hubert (Louis Sheldon Williams), Dunstan (John Gugolka), Jiminee (Mark Lester), Gerty (Phoebe Nicholls), and Willy (Gustav Henry)—span the youthful spectrum from adolescence to early teens. Despite her ailment, Violet refrains from seeking medical help, distrusting figures of authority. Upon Violet's quiet passing, the children, gripped by fear of the unknown, choose to conceal her death. They lay their mother to rest in the backyard and establish a sacred shrine, with Diana purporting to communicate with their deceased mother. They make ends meet through her annuity checks—skillfully forged by the artistically talented Jiminee—hoping to safeguard her savings for a rainy day, as she would have wished. Every day brings differing opinions on their course of action. Elsa grapples with the pressure of her role as the eldest, Hubert provides comfort, Dunstan preaches with fervor, while the three youngest remain blissfully unaware of the gravity of their circumstances. Their only consensus: to keep adults at bay, particularly opportunistic Mrs. Quayle and their teacher, Miss Bailey (Claire Davidson). Their lives take an unforeseen turn with the unexpected arrival of Charlie Hook (Sir Dirk Bogarde), Violet's estranged husband, who was known to Elsa alone before Violet's death. The children's responses to Charlie's presence are as varied as their personalities. As time unfolds, the Hook children must determine whether Charlie's presence is a boon or a burden, and what steps they must take to ensure their collective future.
