Plot

As the nineteenth century ushers in the twentieth, the story of Biff Grimes unfolds. Grimes, a dentist perpetually shadowed by his past as an ex-con, finds himself forever blaming the trials of his life on his childhood friend, the ambitious and assured Hugo Barnstead. Biff once idolized Hugo until a bitter fallout left a rift between them. Further exacerbating Biff's animosity, he finds himself relocating his dental practice from neighborhood to neighborhood as word of his criminal past seeps into each new community, resulting in a dwindling clientele. Years earlier, Biff had harbored deep affection for the captivating yet narcissistic Virginia Brush. He had dreams of proposing to her, only to find her in the arms of Hugo, who was well aware of Biff's feelings for her. Nursing a broken heart, Biff finds solace in the company of Virginia's liberated and open-minded friend, the nurse Amy Lind. The pair, previously the extra wheels in double dates with Hugo and Virginia, eventually marry. On one fateful Sunday afternoon, when the world is basking in the glory of June and couples are indulging in leisurely strolls, Biff's life takes another unexpected turn. Just as he and Amy are preparing to join the world outside, an emergency call disrupts their plan. Biff is needed for an urgent tooth extraction. The patient, unbeknownst to him until then, is none other than Hugo. This unexpected reentry of Hugo into his life forces Biff to reflect on his past and his choices. In doing so, he might discover that the most important aspects of his life have often gone unnoticed. This nostalgic and introspective journey begins on one Sunday afternoon, compelling Biff to reassess his life, his regrets, and his relationships in a new light.
