Plot

In the rural landscapes of northeastern Minnesota, three interconnected stories unfurl against the backdrop of the Fond du Lac Reservation and its neighboring town, Cloquet. The narrative's first thread follows Rain O'Rourke and Johnny Goodfeather, a teacher and a reservation police officer who have been cohabiting off the reservation due to circumstances. As Johnny prepares to embark on an FBI training program in Washington, DC, their decade-long relationship is put to the test. Meanwhile, Rain grapples with cryptic visions, fearing she might be succumbing to the same mental illness that has her mother, Irene, confined to a psychiatric institution. Raised by her westernized Auntie Apple, and with Father Dimitri Bartoli as their spiritual guide, Rain must confront these inexplicable visions and their potential implications. In the second story, government geologist Luke Patterson arrives in the region, drawn by reports of a rare earthquake on the reservation. As he navigates the bureaucratic process with Johnny's assistance, an unlikely friendship forms, further entangling their lives. Concurrently, the political arena buzzes as Native American Steve Klamath campaigns for mayor against long-standing incumbent Paul Gunderson, a staunch advocate for reservation development. Despite facing apathy from the native population and disdain from non-Natives, Steve perseveres, hoping to champion native rights from within the system. All the while, Richard Two Rivers, a radio talk show host seen as the reservation's voice, becomes an unexpected ally, offering Steve's campaign much-needed airtime. The culmination of these tales reveals a sinister plot woven into the fabric of their shared history. A haunting secret hidden within the now-deserted Catholic boarding school on the reservation emerges, threatening to shatter the tranquility of their lives. As Rain's disturbing visions coalesce with her mother's silenced truth, the narrative plunges into the harrowing legacy of cultural genocide and identity loss endured by the Native American community. This suspenseful drama unveils the lasting repercussions of the atrocities committed at these institutions across the United States and Canada, relentlessly exploring the struggle for truth, identity, and redemption.
