Plot

Nestled in the heart of Santiago's historic downtown, the lives of Isadora (Belgica Castro) and Enrique (Alejandro Sievking) unfold. Their apartment, a modest haven of elegance, commands a stunning view of the mountains, while their beloved cats provide a warm companionship. They thrive in their 80s, independent and content, surrounded by a medley of books and eclectic art. However, their serene existence is disrupted when the building's elevator breaks down, leaving Isadora a captive in her tenth-floor haven. Simultaneously, their vivacious, rebellious daughter, Rosario (Claudia Celedon), and her unconventional partner, Hugo (Catalina Saavedra), decide to visit with a get-rich-quick scheme. The catch? The elderly couple must sign over their apartment's lease. As Rosario watches her mother like a hawk, waiting for any signs of senility that would give her the upper hand, Isadora desperately tries to conceal her rapidly deteriorating mental state. The tension escalates when Isadora, exhibiting early signs of senility, embarks on a perilous journey down ten flights to the bustling streets of Santiago. Rescued from her daring adventure, the mother-daughter duo, along with their respective spouses, embark on a journey of forgiveness, envisioning a new future together. By intertwining elements of black humor and poignant pathos, directors Sebastian Silva and Pedro Peirano craft a touching narrative. "Old Cats" explores the complex terrain of mother-daughter relationships, emphasizing the empathy required to navigate it and reach a place of mutual understanding. The film serves as both a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a commentary on the universal struggle of aging.
