In the early 2000s, a once-thriving colony of Little Penguins on Middle Island found themselves under threat. As foxes started to swim across the waters, the penguins began to fall prey, their numbers dwindling rapidly. In response, the dedicated Warnambool Coastcare Landcare Group initiated The Middle Island Maremma Project in 2006, a last-ditch effort to save the diminishing penguins. At the heart of this hopeful endeavour is Oddball, an unpredictable and mischievous dog with a reputation for causing trouble on land. However, when given a second chance, this seemingly naughty dog emerges as the penguins' unexpected saviour. Trained by an eccentric chicken farmer, Shane Jacobson, with the assistance of his spirited granddaughter, Oddball transforms into the guardian of the penguin sanctuary, warding off the predatory foxes. As Oddball takes on his new role, his efforts do more than just protect the penguins; they help heal fractures within Jacobson's family and instill newfound hope in their seaside town. 'Oddball' is a heartening tale of redemption, unity, and unlikely heroes, exploring how a troublesome dog could turn out to be the saviour of an entire species and a small seaside community.
