Plot

As the curtains rise in 1971, the esteemed poet Pablo Neruda stands before an awestruck audience, receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature. His acceptance speech, however, transcends mere gratitude, unveiling long-forgotten chapters of his life. The narrative flashes back to 1948, where a single Senator's accusation morphs Neruda into a political fugitive, hunted by the very Republic he once served. A conflict with the then President thrusts Neruda onto a treacherous path of survival. His mission: to traverse the dangerous Andes Mountains, risking life and reputation as he seeks refuge in Argentina. This perilous flight from the clutches of political nemesis draws him back to the southern landscapes of Chile, a nostalgic return to the places of his youth. It is within these turbulent times and familiar surroundings that Neruda pens his magnum opus, 'Canto General'. As the narrative oscillates between the past and the Nobel Prize moment, the film paints a vivid picture of a poet's struggle and resilience, offering a deeply human portrayal of the man behind the verses. The poet's journey, intertwined with the political landscape of the time, ultimately shapes Neruda into the revered figure he is celebrated as today. The movie, Neruda: The Fugitive, is a testament to the power of the human spirit and the transformative magic of literature.
