Matthew Morgan, a widowed, octogenarian American professor, leads a life of solitude and loss in the vibrant city of Paris, despite being unable to master its native tongue. His life of quiet desolation is interrupted when he crosses paths with Pauline Laubie, a vivacious dance instructor who is half his age yet equally solitary. She yearns for familial connection, a yearning she believes she can fulfill with the enigmatic Matthew. Their bond deepens, with Pauline nursing him through a hospital stay, and it seems like they might be able to carve out an unconventional family for themselves.
