In the throes of youthful audacity, a gaggle of adolescents decide their fate by drawing straws, instigating a daring cigarette theft. This seemingly innocuous act catapults Sebastian, our hero, into a surreal journey through a world stagnated by rigidity, where he embarks on a quest for self-discovery and a longing for justice and truth. As he attempts to break free from a societal mould, he finds himself ensnared in yet another.
Director Ulrich Weiß, liberated by the collapse of the Wall, seizes this opportunity to weave his previously unfulfilled visions into this cinematic tapestry. "Miraculi" is an amalgamation of two passion projects that had been brewing in his mind for over a decade, but were consistently thwarted by the censorship of the East German film studio.
The film is enriched by a guest appearance from the formidable Brechtian actress, Käthe Reichel, a key figure in the historic November 4, 1989 demonstration for freedom and democracy in East Berlin. Thus, "Miraculi" unfolds, a symphony of symbolic odysseys and the human condition, set against the backdrop of a world on the brink of transformation.
